My Story

At the age of 4...

I was diagnosed with cancer. I can remember most of the details but, The doctors tell me that my sister saved my life. My little sister was 6 months old and had some health issues that brought my family to the Minneapolis Children’s Hospital. After my parents talked to the doctors, about my sister, The doctors also thought it was a good idea to do an ultrasound on my kidneys because I was doing the “potty dance” and had 1 kidney infection. That was the day that my life changed. I was immediately admitted to the hospital and in the days to follow I had a surgery, a port was put in place, and I had my first chemo treatment. I was diagnosed with stage 5 Wilm’s Tumor. Cancer didn't define me. However, it is an important part of my journey and has greatly impacted the person I am today. I am more compassionate towards others, I live each day to the fullest, and I don’t feel like I need to be perfect. I appreciate everything big and small, I focus on what matters, and I don’t take anything for granted.

I am so thankful for all the opportunities I am given. I am so fortunate to be able to spend time with my family, friends, and all the people that touch my life. People assume that when cancer is gone, it's gone, but side effects from the treatment and medication stay for a very long time. I have a learning disability in reading and writing which the doctors feel is a side effect from my treatments. At first school was hard but I had an amazing teacher that have helped me cope with my learning disability and I feel confident that I can achieve my goals. Everyday I see the scar on my stomach and am reminded of how strong I am and how lucky I am to be able to enjoy what this new day has to bring. But I also fear the possibility that I am hear the words “you have cancer again”. Life is short and can be horribly unfair. I never forget that and want to make the most of the chance I've been given. I want to share my experiences with other young kids that have learning disabilities. I want to be that amazing teacher that can help kids cope with their learning disabilities and encourage them to achieve their goal. Today I am a 16 year cancer survivor...
